Typical Hatha Class
The basic class doesn't change too much from time to time. Rather, the variety comes from you.
Warmup ~ 10 minutes

12 Postures ~ 50 minutes

Relaxation ~ 10 minutes

Breathing ~ 10 minutes

Meditation/Chanting ~ 10 minutes

Brief Background
The class follows the discipline of traditional hatha yoga and will focus on peace of mind and self inquiry. Strength and flexibility are not the emphasis. Yoga (translated "union") is:
proper exercise
proper breathing
proper relaxation
proper diet
positive thinking and meditation.
We'll typically work on all of these during class. Yoga respects all religions and paths including Atheism, other non-believers, science, music, etc. etc. One way of saying this is "Truth is one, paths are many," or visually:
There will sometimes be chants that open and close the class. Here are the most common ones:
Om Shanti
Om Peace or May there be peace
Namaste
The light within me solutes the light within you
Hari Om (call and response, ususally not translated during class)
Uncover the Bliss
(this one is not call and response, we just say it)
Asato ma sat gamaya
Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya
mrityor ma amritam gamaya
Om Shanti Shanti Shantihi
Lead us from unreal to real
Lead us from darkness to the light
Lead us from the fear of death to the knowledge of immortality
May there be peace, peace, peace
About the Teachers
We're open to the idea of having others teach classes, though we've never tried it.
Usually, the class will be taught by a couple, Jay and Jodi. Jay is a student at the Media Lab in the Lifelong Kindergarten group, and Jodi works at Hollow Reed as a preschool teacher. They both are graduate resident tutors on campus at MIT.
They have gone through 2 months of training at Yoga and Inner Peace in Lake Worth, FL to become certified by the national yoga alliance. They have also spent several months-long retreats as Living Yoga Trainees at Yogaville in VA, where Jodi has been specifically trained in yoga teaching for the following: prenatal, labor and delivery, and post partum.
They have taught hundreds of Yoga classes including years of teaching on campus at MIT, and they have trained people 1-on-1. They are also certified Reiki practitioners. Most importantly, they both have a regular practice...
